Google Maps and local search
Google Business Profile help for Perth businesses
If people nearby search for what you do and you're not on the map, it's nearly always one of a handful of things. Most of them are settings in your profile, not your website. We find which one it is and fix it.
Why is my business not showing up on Google?
These are the reasons we find, roughly in the order we find them.
- 1
The profile isn't verified
Until Google verifies you, it can hold back your edits and keep the profile out of results. There's usually a banner at the top of the profile saying so. It's easy to miss.
- 2
There are two of you
Someone set one up years ago, then someone else made another. Google allows one profile per business, and two of them split your reviews and confuse what it shows.
- 3
The category is wrong
Your main category tells Google what you are. If an electrician is listed as a "contractor", or a web designer as "IT support", Google won't show them for the thing people are searching for.
- 4
The searcher is too far away
Distance is one of the three things Google says it ranks on. If your address is in Joondalup, someone searching in Malaga sees the businesses closer to them first. Better relevance and more reviews are how you win back ground.
- 5
The service area is too big
Google says a service area shouldn't go past about two hours' drive from your base. Ticking every state doesn't get you more work. It can move your map pin somewhere you've never been.
- 6
Not enough reviews
Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. A competitor with 40 reviews will usually sit above one with 3, even if the work is no better.
It happened to us too
When we checked our own listing, Google Maps showed two GBIT Automation profiles. The one we'd been updating had no reviews, and its pin sat in the middle of South Australia because the service area covered the whole country. The one with our reviews was under a different Google account and had never been verified, so nothing we changed on it was showing.
None of that shows up from the outside. You only find it by opening every profile and every account. That's the first thing we do for you.
What we do
- Find every profile Google holds for your business, and work out which Google account owns each one
- Get the right profile verified, and close the duplicates without losing your reviews
- Set the main category and the fewest extra ones that describe what you actually do
- Fix the service area, the hours, and closed days for WA public holidays
- Make the name, address and phone match your website exactly
- Set up a simple way to ask every customer for a review, not just the happy ones, because Google doesn't allow picking and choosing
- Check where you show on the map from the suburbs you care about, before and after, so you can see what changed
It stays your profile, on your Google account. We get added as a manager to do the work.
How do I get my business to show up on Google?
Start with a free profile at business.google.com and get it verified. Pick the one category that says what you are. Put your hours in, and make the phone number and address match your website. Then ask every customer for a review, straight after the job.
That gets you on the map. Where you sit on it comes down to how close you are to the person searching, how well your profile matches what they typed, and how well known you are. Reviews and links from other local sites help with the last one.
Where we work
We're based in Perth's northern suburbs and work with businesses around Wangara, Joondalup, Wanneroo, Malaga, Balcatta, Osborne Park and the rest of Perth. Most of it is done remotely, and we're happy to come out to you. More on local SEO in the northern suburbs.
